I’ve been making some software and placing copyright symbol to them. The reason is to inform  the public that my work is original and if want to use them they have to ask permission from me. One thing I learn of using the copyright symbol is from this article from this website.

The first thing to note is that for copyright there is only one form of the symbol (©), unlike trade marks, where there is a symbol for registered trade marks (®) and a symbol for unregistered trade marks (™). 

To qualify for use of the registered trade mark symbol (®) you must register your trade mark with the appropriate authority in your country, whereas the trade mark symbol (™) can be applied to any symbol you are using as a trade mark. Use of the copyright symbol is more similar to use of the trade mark symbol, as work does not need to be registered in order to use it.

You can place the copyright symbol on any original piece of work you have created. The normal format would be to include alongside the copyright symbol the year of first publication and the name of the copyright holder, however there are no particular legal requirements regarding this. While it has historically been a requirement in some jurisdictions to include a copyright notice on a work in order to be able to claim copyright over it, the Berne Convention does not allow such restrictions, and so any country signed up to the convention no longer has this requirement. However, in some jurisdictions failure to include such a notice can affect the damages you may be able to claim if anyone infringes your copyright.

A similar situation exists in relation to the phrase “All Rights Reserved”. This phrase was a requirement in order to claim international copyright protection in countries signed up to the 1910 Buenos Aires Convention. However, since all countries signed up to the Buenos Aires Convention are now also signed up to the Berne Convention (which grants automatic copyright) this phrase has become superfluous. The phrase continues to be used frequently but is unlikely to have any legal consequences.

72-Hour Emergency Kit

After Japan’s earthquake and tsunami I have come to realize that we must be ready of whatever calamities might come. For many years we have been taught in our church the necessity of preparing an emergency kit. It was a counsel that has been taken lightly by most of us until this calamity strikes of which enlightens our minds the urgency to provide preparations for our families.

May I share with you the 72-hour kit that we should prepare.

In times of natural disasters such as typhoons, floods, or earthquakes, the family may need to survive in a situation where food, safe water and other necessities can not be purchased or easily obtained.

It is only prudent that we follow the admonition of the scriptures that tell us “if you are prepared you shall not fear”… This preparation includes a 72-Hour Emergency Survival Kit.  These kits are designed to supply a minimum amount of food, safe water and other supplies for survival purposes. The first 72 hours is critical for survival. After 72 hours, chances for survival increases.  Services will begin to be restored by this time.

It is suggested that you store the type of foods that require a minimum of preparation, cooking, and no refrigeration.  There should be one 72-Hour Kit for each member of the family. A backpack or similar type bag is the easiest to carry, and leaves the hands free, if required to walk some distance to safety. Although a large plastic bag may serve this purpose. The following suggestion is for one adult and will help you in preparing your 72-Hour Kit:

Food: 3 pkgs. Milo 6 cans sardines or other canned or dried meat 6 pkg. Crackers

6 pkgs. Noodles, Instant Oatmeal or soup Small pkg. milk (Optional)

6 Cups Rice 3 pkgs. Dried or canned fruit

4 liters potable water Salt/spices as desired 1 Cup Sugar (Optional)

{Any medicines required daily by family members–Important documents-birth certificates, deeds,etc.

{Hygiene items: tooth brush, tooth paste, soap, washcloth, small towel, female needs

{Paper and pen to leave messages-needed clothing-small games for children- blankets

{Small First-Aid Kit – Alcohol and bandages, anti-biotic ointment-anti-diarrhea -1 kit per family

{Light source-flashlight and batteries-candles and matches

{Small battery radio for emergency information-per family–emergency money-banks will be closed

{Sheet of heavy plastic or tarp for shelter -cooking pots, can opener-1 per family

*All of the above items need to be stored and carried in waterproof and pest-proof containers.

* Perishable items should be checked and replaced as often as is needed, preferably every 6 months, to maintain a safe supply of food and water.

Rice: To store properly there should be little or no oxygen in the containers. Either fill plastic bottles to the top and tightly screw on lids or partially fill thick plastic bags, squeeze the air out and tie a knot in the bag or tape the top.

Noodles, crackers, Milo, etc: Place store-wrapped packages in plastic bags, squeeze out the air, and tie top of bag in a knot.

Fuel: Plan a way to cook the rice and boil water, etc. in an emergency. Handle cooking containers with caution not to burn hands while removing from the fire.

Plan: As a family, decide on a plan to use in case of emergency.  A place to meet, phone numbers to call, family or friends to contact if you cannot reach home-Call-For-Help Cards. Nothing is more disturbing than not knowing where family members are in times of disaster or crisis. Store 72-Hour Kits where they can be easily accessed upon leaving the home.

Technology Changes

Ten years ago I bought a second hand computer set for 15,000 pesos. It was a reliable computer to be used for office applications and light computer games. A Pentium S desktop having a memory of less than a gigabyte.

Today I could purchase at the same amount a brand new system unit which speed is 10-20 times faster than that PC and has memory of 30 more times. Technology changes, its acceleration is faster than an old man learning how to use them.

Ever since men has trying to make human life more easy and comfortable, thus we become superior in all God’s creation.

From the beginning of trade people always find ways that commerce, counting, and calculating would be more easy. The abacus was created, a calculating tool used primarily in parts of Asia for performing arithmetic processes.

During the industrial revolution many inventions of calculating devices have been used and improved. The difference engine and the analytical engine created by Charles Babbage were one of the great inventions of those days. A video from youtube tells the invention, please watch.

During the word war II the Germans, the proponent of the war, were trying to take the advance in the use of weapons and communication technology, since communication plays the vital role in winning the war the Enigma was created to send coded messages. The British, who first received the attack, did not hesitate to find ways to bring down the opponent. The Colossus was created by the British government a counter technology for the enigma.

The Americans were also interested in warfare technology. They created the ENIAC, designed to calculate artillery firing  for the United States Army’s Ballistics, but its first use was in calculations for the hydrogen bomb. From that experience they develop other technologies like the GPS (Global Positioning System) tracks enemies’ location and others.

Nowadays, the Americans also have stepped up to use the cyber weapons. Instead of risking planes to bomb power grids, telephone, exchanges rail roads, they envision soldiers at a computer terminal silently invading foreign networks to shut down electrical facilities, interrupt communication, crash trains and disrupt financial systems.

Who knows that modern wars between nations could happen in internet cafes.

Community Map – Unit Plan

After that wonderful training from Intel, I was then scheduled to attend an ischools training, a campblog for 10 days. I have to leave my students with some assignments for them to work while I am away. The training from Fit Ed was just in a right time, my 4th year Rizal students were going to work for a unit plan made during that Intel Teach training. The project was about making a community map for their purok.

My students were divided into 5 groups, they have to plan, decide and choose a purok community of which they would the make a map, they have to talk to the community leaders about the projects. Some of my students think, why need to have this project?, why community map when our subject is Technology and Livelihood Education – ICT? And later they realize its importance. One great lesson from this project was my students were able to develop a sense of responsibility  and develop creativity,  aside from enhancing themselves in the use of photo editing software learned from their computer class. They learn other valuable 21st century skills, of which this would not be learned by purely lecturing it in the classroom. The unit plan also includes some assessment tools to measure the students’ performance.

I may not implemented this project more perfectly, but sure, the idea would help me become a good educator. Now I already have the idea on how to design  TLE projects that will enhance my students performance and at the same time an application of their learning from science, mathematics and other subjects related to Technology and Livelihood Education.

Jooms, for our website

I have a very busy week,  having our school website installed in our ubuntu computer in preparation for the upcoming closure program of CICT- BUKSU. I have learned  installing JOOMLA 1.0.13 version, an open source software as our school website platform. The following are the steps in installing.

  1. Download XAMPP for linux from

  2. Copy xammp-linux-x.x.x.tar.gz to opt- /opt/ lampp (sudo cp xammp-linux-x.x.x.tar.gz to opt /opt/ FOLDER)

  3. Extract xammp-linux-x.x.x.tar.gz to opt- /opt/ lampp (sudo tar-xvf  xammp-linux-x.x.x.tar.gz -C /opt/) Check if the lampp FOLDER is created inside /opt/ then, (cd/opt/)
  4. CREATE LAUNCHER Type: Application, Name: XAMPP Control Panel (gksudo python /opt/lampp/share/xampp-control-panel/
  5. Run the launcher
  6. Test Load browser URL = http://localhost, or
  7. Dowload Joomla
  8. To unzip joomla (sudo unzip -d /opt/lampp/htdocs/website folder))
  9. To change mode (sudo chmod 777 -R /opt/lampp/htdocs/(website folder))
  10. Install Joomla (http://localhost/website)
  11. After installation remove or rename the installation folder ( to remove sudo rm -f /opt/lampp/htdocs/(website)/installation)

Guess what?, I have found a very useful social networking website , the “Ning” ( A website platform where you can build for your students  and is very attractive to them. Making a Web Template

An HTML -made Web Template can be done by constructing  simple table/s.  If you are already familiar of making tables in a web page, I bet, this would be easy for you. Here is very a  simple template I made it myself, you may copy.
